richardforrester13Canada's starting pitcher, Lauren Bay Regula, throws against Japan in their women's softball game at the Beijing Games on Monday.  Yukiko Ueno (3-0) was sharp for Japan, allowing just three hits with two strikeouts in six innings of shutout softball.  Bay Regula was hurt by an error in the second, however.  The margin of victory could have been even larger for Japan, which left 14 runners on base.  The Americans scored all nine runs in the first inning to tie the mark for most runs scored in an inning against China at Fengtai Softball Field on Monday.  Kelly Kretschman did the most damage for the U.S.  China's record drops to 2-5 and will not advance to the medal round.  In the seventh inning, Chinese Taipei (2-5) scored a run on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-2.  The Netherlands (1-6) has avoided becoming the only winless team in Olympic softball history. It was only the second appearance for the Dutch women in Olympic softball. Their only other appearance was at the 1996 Atlant...

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has reduced its staff through layoffs and voluntary separations, company officials said Friday. Companywide, the Sun-Sentinel this year eliminated 167 of its approximately 1,600 positions, a company spokesman said. Some of the reductions were the result of open positions that were not filled. Sixty-one of the job cuts were in the newsroom. Most of those staffers left the paper in late July."These reductions are a result of the tough economic challenges we are all facing right now," said Sun-Sentinel president and publisher Howard Greenberg. "However, they will not impact our commitment to quality journalism, and we will continue to be the best source of local news and advertising in our market."  Other newspapers owned by Chicago-based Tribune Co. have also been cutting staff and reducing their news space in recent months, as the media company tries to trim fixed costs and preserve cash flow for debt repayment. Tribune bought out its shareholders last Dec...

A whole bunch of things fell at once and so that way there's no pressure from this point on."Quentin was h...
